God’s Bankers: Faith in the City

02 May 2011 | Written by | Posted in News | Tags: , ,

The Independent published an interesting article recently entitled God’s Bankers: How evangelical Christianity is taking a hold of London’s financial institutions. Well worth a read.

One aspect that came out of the article was the reluctance of people working in the city to be open about their faith, or even to let their colleagues know that they were Christians. Do you find the same issue in your workplace?

Please discuss below.

How could BiG improve?

18 Feb 2011 | Written by | Posted in News | Tags:

Business in Glasgow (BiG) are privileged to be working with two final year students undertaking an MA Business & Management Honours Degree at the University of Glasgow. Henri Debono Huskinson and Habibah Kamaluden are undertaking a three month research and consultancy project as part of their final year dissertation. The purpose of their research is:

  • To establish BiG’s presence in the Glasgow Business Community
  • The viability of expanding BiG to other parts of the city
  • To help enhance our online presence and networking through social media networking such as LinkedIn.
  • Identify potential sources of finance to create a permanent position to grow BiG’s service to businesses
  • Review current marketing strategy and expand client base

Henri & Habibah joined us at our last BiG talk and here is what Henri said:

“Thank you very much for the invite and allowing myself and Habibah the opportunity to get a better insight into the events. To be honest we were more use to attending seminars where people sit in a line whilst someone talks until everyone falls asleep. Your event was a breath of fresh air from the more traditional approach. The whole setup was fantastic; people can talk & mingle, ask questions, listen to the speaker & also eat.”

Thank-you for making BiG the success it is, welcoming new people and for being part of all we do.

We would greatly appreciate if you would now take a few minutes to answer the short survey that has been put together by Henri & Habibah of behalf of BiG to help us develop our services.

Take the Survey!

BBC Lent Talk

08 Mar 2010 | Written by | Posted in News | Tags: , ,

I’ve just been listening to Andreas Whittam Smith on BBC iPlayer give a great Lent Talk on the financial markets and the temptation of Christ.

Well worth a listen as a summary of the temptations what people who work with wealth face. It takes about 10 minutes to listen to.

Hope you find this helpful

New Venue: Glasgow City Mission

Glasgow City Mission HQ

New Venue: Glasgow City Mission’s new HQ in Crimea Street

Our final Business in Glasgow seminar for 2009 provides all our supporters and participants a unique opportunity to visit the recently opened premises of the Glasgow City Mission, an organisation which began in 1826 through the vision and compassion of David Naismith its founder.

Once the first of its kind, now duplicated in the major cities of the planet, Glasgow City Mission continues to offer practical as well as spiritual support to the most vulnerable in the City of Glasgow.

With the recession continuing to make significant inroads into our city’s working population it is a good thing to remind ourselves that vulnerability is not just reserved for the poor of society. We are witnessing, if not experiencing, such vulnerability across the business scene too but as with many successful charitable organisations the Glasgow City Mission is a reminder that there is also hope and a future.

We are grateful to Glasgow City Mission for offering to host this event, and we welcome anyone from the business community in Glasgow to join us.

We are pleased to have launched the new Business in Glasgow website. The site has been completely redesigned using the WordPress content management system and will allow us to be more responsive in creating new content.

We’ve only migrated this year’s talks so far. If you’re looking for material from before that, please visit our (ahem) “legacy” site.

Please do let us know what else you would like to see on this site. What would help you at work?
