This event is a private luncheon with Peter Shaukat to hear his stories of successful entrepreneurial mission. This seminar will appeal to an audience of senior managers and executives (and others) who would like to hear more about this theme and consider becoming involved as an investor/participant/mentor in overseas mission initiatives.

Peter will talk about:

  • Business as mission
  • The fund he runs invests in small and medium sized enterprises in developing countries
  • Opportunities for business people in Glasgow to become involved in business as mission initiatives

Business as Mission and Business for Mission are two different, albeit valid concepts. Business for Mission tends to place the focus on profits generated from a business being gifted to support a ministry or charitable activities. On the other hand, Business as Mission focuses on the business entity itself and all its operations and outcomes as an integrated, intentionally missional calling, in order to advance the community in which it operates.

The vision of the Fund is Business as Mission to enable entrepreneurs and business professionals to develop and lead profitable and effective companies in the Arab world and Asia by providing investment capital. The Fund’s objectives are to see Business as Mission companies established that will:

  1. Achieve sustainable profitability
  2. Produce goods and services that add quality to life
  3. Create local employment
  4. Operate ethically
  5. Have community impact

We do look forward to hearing from you should this be of interest and do hope you can join us to listen to the interesting & inspiring case studies Peter will share and may consider becoming involved

We are delighted to have Iain MacLeod with us on Tuesday 10th May 2011, former Divisional Director with GE Money, to share with us The Sales Secrets of Ancient Wisdom Writers. Iain will explore 10 principles or practices that you can apply that will help you increase your business sales today.

Iain states:

“In tough economic times, it can be a challenging to achieve business growth and if ever there was a need to review sales tactics and strategies it is right now. “

In this short workshop, you will travel back 3000 years to review important principles and practices laid down by three ancient wisdom writers, (a Philosopher, a Prophet and a National Leader) which all have a particular relevance to sales and marketing today and when applied within your business, can have a transforming impact on your sales performance. Iain’s high performing sales team was recognised as the “Best Team in Europe”.

Come along to find out more and you will come away with five sales practices that you can apply immediately to increase your sales results and enjoy some informal networking and connecting at the same time.

Report

Jack Quinn

Iain brought to us a succinct talk containing practical five points based on his understanding of some of the Hebrew prophetic and wisdom writings with a little dash of Greek philosophy thrown in.

Iain reminded us that most people don’t like selling, that we prefer buying and that sales people used to be top ranking in the hated professions or occupations.

Iain reminded us that selling is about building a relationship and the five principles of successful selling in his experience have been the following:

  1. Be structured: He based this part of the talk on Isaiah the prophet with respect to the harvesting of cummin. He reminded us that hard work is essential in being a good salesperson and the important point is to do the preparation work, to cultivate and build relationships. To know your product, to know your customer and remember ‘value’ is what the customer discerns and needs rather than what you believe they need. In the analogy that Isaiah the prophet gave it is about a) cultivating, b) planting c) harvesting and he reminded us that in the harvesting of cummin a light rod is required rather than a very hard stick!
  2. Be authentic: The second aspect is based on his reading from Aristotle who in his day realised that being authentic was critical in being a good business person. The integrity of the message is equally important to the authenticity of the salesperson. So the ethos of what is being sold and the person selling it is important. If the business model is out of line with who the person is who is trying to sell, then the buyer immediately understands and perceives this almost subconsciously. You need to have a passion about what you are selling, whatever that product might be, and the most important feature of all in dealing with your clients is to be honest.
  3. Set goals: Iain based this practical point on the Wisdom Writings of Solomon. In order to set goals we need to be clear about what our goals are and to be aware of the temptation to continually add to them and expand before we are capable of meeting the demands that we are creating.
  4. Stay on track: The more we do sometimes the more confused our customers become. We need to stay focused on what our primary task is.
  5. Get busy: If we are waiting to get it completely right before we get started, we will never get started. If we wait until we are the perfect salesperson we will never succeed in selling anything.

Iain then summarised his talk by pointing us to his website, where we can link up for some further practical points. The free offer was made to those who attended the seminar and those who did not attend are free to download the slides and the exercises.

We are deeply indebted to Iain’s enthusiastic, simple, practical and succinct way he presented his topic today, giving us more ammunition in our armoury to become better business people.

We are delighted to confirm as was mentioned at the lunch time seminar in March we are planning to do something different in April. Instead of meeting at our usual lunch time slot we are planning to move it to a much earlier time and do a breakfast slot from 7.45am to 8.45am. We will have breakfast at the La Vita restaurant at the corner of St Vincent Place and Queen’s Street looking onto the heart of the city in George Square.

The name of the restaurant which means ‘the beautiful life’ provides the theme for the breakfast which will be ‘Life in the City’ and on this occasion Jack Quinn, Trustee of BiG, will be leading some thoughts on this theme.

Already a number of people have confirmed that they are intending to join Jack on this occasion. We would be grateful if we could have firm responses now so that we can inform the restaurant of how many people will be attending.

Jack is looking forward to this occasion, not least in the fact that not being a morning person himself, he will be interested to meet those who are. Even if you are not a morning person, can we extend the challenge to join Jack in getting up that little bit earlier to join other like minded folks who have a real heart for the city and a concern for its wellbeing and join us for breakfast as we reflect on these matters.

Please note that our BiG networking lunch will be on Tuesday 10th May and not our usual first Tuesday of the month. Speaker details to follow.

We are delighted to have Colin McKeand with us on Tuesday 1st March 2011 to share with us his insights on very topical and indeed tasty subject nutrition and how healthy living and healthy eating goals can help us to look forward to a longer, healthier and often ailment free life. It is known that food is one of our greatest healers and what we eat can make the difference between feeling energised, motivated and fresh or feeling stressed, depressed and lifeless.

Colin is a popular and sought after speaker who has presented and talked to a wide variety of organisations. He delivers entertaining, interactive and powerful presentations and Colin will have a few surprises and promises to challenge your beliefs about food and nutrition. Full details of Colin’s company can be found at www.diet-nutrition.co.uk.

BiG Event Report
Colin McKeand introduced this topic  by reminding us that the way we live is greatly influenced by the way we eat and the fundamental factors in his talk were, there are a huge range of ‘myths’ surrounding food and what is best for us. He prefaced his talk by reminding us that in all things we need to treat the topic not in isolation but to look at food, nutrition, diet and lifestyle as a whole rather than  something to be focused on narrowly.

Colin exposed many of the myths that have become fact in our understanding of eating and about what foods are good for us. He reminded us that in 1977 in the United States and then 1983 in the UK there was a complete ‘u turn’ of advice on food: basically fat was no longer good and indeed ‘demonised’. Subsequently carbohydrates were promoted as substances that we ought to eat much of, so therefore we were encouraged to base our meals on starchy foods,  together with  five fruit or vegetables a day and fish at least twice a week. In addition, the less salt we took with our food the better. The advice would be rounded of by drinking lots of water and fundamentally don’t skip breakfast.

Colin highlighted that the topic is a little more complex than the above. For example  salt intake is an important issue but what do you cut out? Effectively sodium chloride is the salt that is not good for us but the salt we need is the unrefined kind and it is as important to consider the constituent elements of the salt as much as the amount.

Colin took us back to the fact that in 1991 in California a marketing company devised the scheme of eating five pieces of fruit and vegetables a day, this has been the mantra of most health organisations and government agencies ever since. The irony is, as far as Colin could make out this is not evidence based. It sounds good but what about the issue of what is better to eat, vegetables or fruit? Colin highlighted the fact that vegetables are probably the better for us and when we eat fruit we should eat it in conjunction with nuts and seeds because they are full of minerals and that fat soluble vitamins need fat receptors to absorb them.

He also highlighted the need for Vitamin D in our diet and with the discouragement to spend too much time in the sun, there is an upsurge in the vitamin D deficiency in  the form of rickets.

It was quite clear in the way Colin was taking our talk that a lot of the things we take for granted needs to be looked at even more closely. He also highlighted that our food is the poorer now because minerals essential to our bodies are depleted in the soil and therefore we do not get the same benefit out of our food that we once did. Therefore he was more open to taking supplements to sustain the vitamin deficiencies that we have through the lack of poorer quality food available to us.

Colin also believed that fats were hyped too much as being bad for us because fat is one of the main nutrients for our bodies and that we have lost some of the good fats for our health, for example butter being one of them. Butter is a good food, especially butter that is not liquidised and put into a tub to make it spread better.  Similarly, a diet with fish would be a healthy diet but where are the fish sourced from and what is the mercury content within them?

One of the questions from the floor was that even with good quality supplements to complement our diet; do they lose some of their potency as soon as they are opened to the air? Colin recommended that the higher quality supplements which were based on natural foods and plants were better at being able to retain their potency.

Colin delivered a talk that challenged the complacent attitude we can have to our nutrition, another helpful resource to our BiG seminar repertoire.

We are delighted to be hosting former TV news presenter Jill Brown on our first talk of 2011. Jill will be sharing with us her wisdom & insight into managing the Media and how the media works. Jill spent six years working on STV’s news programme, ‘Scotland Today,’ as well as the social affairs, health and lifestyle series, ‘Scottish Action.’ She has also done some freelance reporting for the BBC’s ‘Radio Cafe,’ as well as producing documentaries. Jill spent two years managing PR for a Scottish charity and now runs Jill Brown Media, working with a range of clients who aim to change society for the better.

The media is undoubtedly a powerful force in society today and with so many voices vying for attention, how do you make sure you are heard? How can you get your story on the news agenda? Jill will also advise on how you push good news, as well as some tips for dealing with the bad.

Event Report

Jack Quinn

Jill introduced the topic by remarking on the fact that the average newsreader has 1 minute 25 seconds to get across their piece of news and to have 15 minutes to speak seemed like a huge luxury!

We initially brainstormed about the kind of things that caught our attention on the news and what that illustrated was sport, economics, celebrity, human interest stories; babies, children and animals, were issues that the media frequently reflected.

Jill went onto describe nine points of information that would help prepare anyone who wished to approach the media in order to get their story placed before the wider audience.
1. You have to familiarise yourself with the themes already being used in the media.
2. You need to be prepared to repackage what you have to say in order to interest people.
3. Be prepared to start from scratch in terms of what you have to say to the media.
4. You have to be a risk taker because it is risky talking to the media because they might present your material in a way you either do not expect or do not wish.
5. Be creative; find different ways to express your point of view that will attract attention.
6. You have to consume the publications and the websites, TV and radio programmes you wish to be on, so read the magazines, be up to date. Journalists will listen to someone who knows the material they produce.
7. The more you can do to help the journalist get your story taken up the better and once you get the journalists attention, make yourself available and be prepared to be called upon anytime, day or night if you want your story to be used.
8. The use of social media to get your story across is possible but you need to be consistent and almost need a dedicated team to update it regularly. Be careful of journalists trawling websites to find information that you might not necessarily want to be put on the media.
9. The best place to start is sometimes the simplest. Approach your local press who often are very hungry for items to fill their papers.

Jill then took a wide range of questions from the floor which illustrated the interest she had generated with her talk.
