We do hope you can join us at our next BiG networking lunch when we will continue to unpack the theme of resilience. Indeed what is resilience? There are many descriptions but perhaps the one that is most apt: recovering easily and quickly from shock, illness, hardship, etc ; irrepressible.

We are delighted to have Dr Chris Williams back as our guest speaker. Dr Williams is a Professor of Psychiatry and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at the University of Glasgow. He will be looking at resilience from a professional point of view and how we can rebuild resilience when we are struggling. Resilience is not an innate ability, but a process that can be learned or an approach that can be developed.

Dr Chris Williams main clinical and research interest is in the area of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and in particular in looking at ways of disseminating this approach more widely. He has developed written and computer-based self-help treatments for anxiety, depression and stress to name but a few, under the very successful and popular Living Life to the Full series and is a well-known CBT trainer and teacher. Full details can be found at http://www.llttf.com/ and is a resource that can be offered both on-line and facilitated by BiG in the workplace.

BiG are hosting a series of networking Breakfasts of Encouragement throughout the summer on the first Tuesdays of June, July & August.

“Hope” is needed as we rally ourselves and our teams through these very challenging times and what a great way to start the day with some inspiration and motivation by networking with fellow workers and a short message from the BiG team.

Jack & Gayle will be unpacking the theme “Motivation & Inspiration” throughout the 3 breakfast series. We aim to make the breakfast events fun and refreshing and you will also have a chance to network over a tasty breakfast in the Renfield Café.

A recent quote I heard was “Motivation is like vitamin C- it has to be renewed on a regular basis”. So come along and kick start your day the right way!

We look forward to hearing from you and do hope you can join us on for one or all of the breakfast series. Please note booking is essential for catering purposes.

Leadership with hope is central as we motivate & inspire both ourselves & our teams through the challenges of recession. Are we adaptable, are we prepared to think out the box and look at new ways of approaching situations?

Our BiG Networking lunch in October will help unpack this. You will have the opportunity to participate in a practical exercise and complete your own Leadership Personality Profiling Questionaire, taking about 5 minutes. We will then look at the 4 key leadership styles identified in the questionaire, relating them both to ourselves and people we manage bringing fresh wisdom & insight.

This event will be fun and relaxing and you will also have a chance to network over a cold buffet lunch with the usual seating format at tables.

Remember if you lead yourself you are already a leader! If we want our leadership to last, we must pay attention to 4 crucial elements: “character, perspective, courage and favour” (John C Maxwell).

We do look forward to hearing from you and do hope you can join us on Tuesday 5th October 2010, please note booking is essential for catering purposes.

Event Report (by Jack Quinn)

Gayle Cattanach brought to our October meeting an encouraging and stimulating talk that as always with her warm smile and big heart brought reassurance to those who participated. Personality profiling is not new but there was something fresh about the practical tool Gayle gave us at our lunchtime meeting. It was simple to do, didn’t take long to complete and was surprisingly accurate when we started to make comparisons amongst ourselves.

What I particularly liked was the affirmation that there was no wrong answer (what does that say about me??). Similarly there was a time element to this profiling exercise in that doing it once does not mean we are locked into the particular profile that emerged. Gayle reminded us that at different stages in our lives a different emphasis in our personality may develop.

Gayle’s talk was so practical that it needed to be engaged with at the time to get the best benefit from it. Although I have attached the link to her presentation you may want to participate in the profiling exercise itself. Gayle has agreed to offer this to anyone who feels this could be of help to them or a group within their work place. This is in line with our desire as BiG Trustees to bring practical help and support to all who work in the workplace whenever or wherever we can. A number of people who could not be present have asked for further input from Gayle. If you would like to participate then please do get in touch by emailing Gayle at gayle@businessinglasgow.net.

Following on from the recent survey exploring connections between work and spirituality, one of the key words that repeatedly came up was “busy”.

What about an opportunity to find a quiet space in the busyness of life and work, just to be? Sounds good doesn’t it? Interested?

BiG will be taking part in the 24/7 prayer initiative for Scotland.

A first both for Scotland and BiG, 24/7/365 is a gathering of over 70 Church ministers and leaders from across Scotland who will be praying 24/7 for the year of 2010 for our nation.

Are you interested? If so then do join with us by taking a one hour slot and join in our week of prayer from 16th-23rd May. At BiG we have discovered the difference that praying can make to people, both in their working life and home life. We would also be delighted to pray with or for you at anytime.

If you are interested in a slot, please contact Gayle Cattanach on 07740 467235.
